590 . ‡aHampton‐Brown Edge is designed to meet the literacy needs of English Language Learners and struggling readers in grades 9‐12. Edge provides engaging, high‐interest literature selections (fiction and non‐fiction) based on students' reading levels. Units in Edge are organized around Essential Questions that resonate with today's teens. On Line Coach, a subscription based software program, provides a risk‐free environment for students to read the selections in any of three ways: 1. Read silently with vocabulary support and enhanced comprehension. (Students may click on underlined words to hear them pronounced and readily access more common synonyms or phrases to replace any unknown words. They also answer online questions.) 2. Listen to professionals model fluent reading with text highlighting to facilitate tracking and vocabulary support. 3. Record oral reading for fluency practice with immediate feedback. The Unit Projects draw on out‐of‐school literacies and connect to the real‐world. Self‐assessments and progress reports get students committed to their own learning. The program includes an Interactive Teacher’s edition, online access to staff‐development videos and multiple instruction and assessment resources.
